International Student Wellbeing at Academic Guardians UK

Academic Guardians UK Ltd (AGUK) offers a comprehensive approach to managing student well-being, focusing on the overall development and safety of students under their care. Their services are particularly aimed at international students studying in the UK, ensuring they have a supportive environment that helps them thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Student Wellbeing in Action

Through a robust process driven, with clear policy and procedures-based operation, the AGUK Team can effectively support student wellbeing during school time and very importantly when the school is closed and the students remain in the UK. This is done via:

  • 24/7 access to support and regular communication updates
  • Tailored wellbeing plans
  • Pastoral care & feedback
  • Regular monitoring and reporting
  • Emergency support planning

Expectations from Parents and Students

Open Communication

Parents & students are expected to maintain regular communication with AGUK, providing accurate, timely and detailed relevant information that could impact the student’s well-being (e.g. up-to-date contact numbers, email addresses, arrangement information for when the school is closed, in addition to health issues & family matters).

It is vital that AGUK can successfully fulfil its obligations to the schools it supports, the UK Border Agency and in the robust planning process that requires several accuracies checks to be completed by the team, for all out-of-school arrangements, whether AGUK is directly involved or not.

The office team need to be able to communicate regularly with the student mainly via WhatsApp or Signal. Having a UK mobile phone number also provides greater contact opportunities in instances such as flight arrivals/departures and facilitating transport bookings where the drivers need to make straightforward contact with the students.

Throughout the year the office team will maintain regular social and informative contact with the students sharing useful guidance including, as examples – Supporting homesickness, Keeping Safe, Travel & Transport in the UK, Preparing for Exams.

The office team also look to monitor the successful delivery of such information via the blue ticks or by response receipt from the students. At the start of the academic year for new students there is a check-in with the boarding team to ensure that positive integration and adaptation to the new environments is going well.

Engagement in the Student’s Progress

Parents should engage with AGUK by providing timely out-of-school arrangements information, responses to reports and feedback, discussing any wellbeing matters with their child and supporting the guidance given by AGUK.

Students are expected to actively participate in the well-being programs and activities organised by AGUK. This includes attending in-person and online meetings where applicable and necessary and following the guidance provided. Particular attention should be given to the Student Missing Policy and Procedures, which highlights the steps AGUK must take if the team cannot achieve contact with the student when arrangement timings are not adhered to.

Students are expected to respect the guardianship relationship, understanding that AGUK is there to support them and ensure their well-being. They should communicate openly about any issues or challenges they are facing, whether academic, social, or emotional.

This can be done by contacting any of the Safeguarding Team, including Andrew Kettle, Education Director and Designated Safeguarding Lead on +44 7823 321 993 / andrew@academic-guardians.co.uk

Addressing Homesickness

  1. Understanding Normalcy: Homesickness is a common experience among students, particularly in the early stages of their stay. We help students understand that these feelings are normal and provide them with strategies to cope, such as maintaining regular contact with family and engaging in school activities.
  2. Building a Support Network: We encourage students to build a support network by participating in school clubs and social activities, which helps them make new friends and feel more connected to their new surroundings.
  3. Cultural Sensitivity and Adaptation: All AGUK staff and homestay hosts are trained to understand and navigate cultural differences, aiding students in adapting to the local customs, educational expectations, and social norms. This cultural competence helps ease the transition and minimizes culture shock.

Continuous Support

  • Regular Check-Ins: AGUK maintain regular contact with students, especially during the first few weeks, to monitor their emotional well-being and provide reassurance and guidance as needed. This helps students feel supported and less isolated.
  • Personalized Attention: Each student receives individualised attention to ensure they do not feel lost in the crowd. We provide continuous support from the initial transition period through to graduation, addressing any issues promptly and effectively.
  • Professional Assistance: The AGUK team are available 24/7 to assist with any emergencies or concerns, providing peace of mind to both students and parents. Whether it’s an issue at school or a personal matter, our team is ready to help.

Practical Tips for Students

  • Stay Busy: Encourage your child to stay busy with school activities and hobbies to keep their mind occupied and reduce feelings of homesickness.
  • Communicate Regularly: While it’s important to stay in touch with family, having a set schedule for calls can help students focus on their new life and activities.
  • Self-Care: Remind your child to take care of their physical health by eating well, exercising, and getting enough sleep, which can significantly impact their emotional well-being.

Conclusion

AGUK plays a crucial role in ensuring the well-being of students, providing a structured and supportive environment that helps them succeed in their studies and personal growth. For the system to be effective, active cooperation and communication between AGUK, parents, and students are essential. Parents are expected to stay informed and supportive, while students need to engage with the services and support offered to them.
